Councillors are calling for improvements to Copeland’s economy, following a regional report. (Sourced from Whitehaven News.)

The proposals looked at how the economy could be developed in the year to come and focused on cities such as Liverpool, Manchester and Preston.

But Copeland councillors believed West Cumbria needed to be included more in the plans.

The strategy looks at ways to improve the economy such as focusing on regeneration, development to tackle social deprivation and inclusion, which councillors spoke about at an overview and scrutiny committee meeting.

Councillor Dave Banks said: “The physical and digital connectivity is an issue in our area. To me, our connectivity to the rest of the county is the A66 but what I would like to see is a connection to the A590 via the Duddon Bridge.

“We are not just saying we want a road or bridge but that there is a gateway to the county by joining onto the Dalton to Askam road.”
